How do I know if I need couples counseling?

Couples counseling is a good fit if you and your partner want a more intentional, resilient relationship. Maybe things feel strained, or maybe you simply want to strengthen what’s already working. Many partners come to therapy when they notice patterns they can’t shift on their own, such as recurring arguments, communication breakdowns, emotional distance, or difficulty navigating a major transition. Others seek support when trust has been impacted or when they want a structured space to understand each other more clearly.

You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit. Couples counseling is useful if you want to improve how you communicate, make decisions together, repair after conflict, or build a relationship that feels more aligned with your values. If you’re looking for a process that is guided, evidence‑based, and focused on practical change, this type of therapy can help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

Does my insurance cover couples counseling?

Well, it depends. Some parts of couples counseling can be billed to insurance, but other aspects don't align with a "diagnosis" and therefore insurance won't apply. Also, sometimes, longer sessions are needed to get to the root of the issues without stopping momentum, which is limiting for couples' insurance. Some of our couples therapists use a specific method of couples counseling, known as the Gottman Method, which is a research-based couples therapy approach. Some parts of couples counseling may be completed through the Gottman Portal, and insurance may not cover those parts.

Another important consideration is that it is typically recommended that one or both partners are also engaged in individual therapy at the same time. Insurance typically does cover this individual therapy, but if couples have high-deductible insurance plans, their fees can add up quickly.

What is the Gottman Method?

Gottman Relationship Therapy, created by John and Julie Gottman, is based on decades of couples research and clinical experience. Gottman assessment consists of a three-session process (a 90-minute couples assessment and two 50-minute individual assessment sessions) and a feedback session, where Gottman clinicians compile a personalized Sound Relationship House for each couple. Each Sound Relationship House outlines strengths in your relationship, as well as areas for improvement. Subsequent treatment sessions will reinforce strengths while addressing concerns or areas for improvement. The clinician acts as a coach, teaching interventions that focus on healthy communication, promoting emotional understanding, and building deeper connections. With Gottman Relationship Therapy, you are not working toward the perfect relationship, but rather the relationship that is "good enough" for you.
